The Four Alchemical Stages of Healing: Part Three – Citrinitas, the Yellowing
After the cleansing waters of Albedo comes the third alchemical stage: Citrinitas, or "the yellowing."
If Albedo is purification, Citrinitas is illumination.
This is the stage where healing begins to mature into wisdom. After the darkness of Nigredo and the cleansing of Albedo, something remarkable starts to emerge. The light that first appeared as brief moments of hope now becomes a steady inner sun.
In classical alchemy, Citrinitas represents awakening. It is the dawning of consciousness after a long night. The fragmented parts of ourselves begin coming together, not because life has become perfect, but because we have become more whole.
This is the stage where healing stops feeling like something you're chasing and starts becoming something you're living.
The Yellowing
Citrinitas is the process of embodying the person you have been becoming all along.
The symbols associated with this stage are:
the sun
smoldering fire
gold
crystals
salt
birds and wings
ripening fruit
Emotionally, this stage often feels surprisingly peaceful. The intense emotional waves of Albedo begin settling. Instead of constantly asking, "When will I finally heal?" you begin trusting the process itself.
There is a growing sense of confidence that cannot be manufactured through positive thinking alone. It arises because your nervous system has accumulated enough experiences of safety that wisdom begins replacing fear.
You stop needing constant reassurance.
You begin becoming your own source of guidance.
Integration Rather Than Recovery
One of the defining features of Citrinitas is integration.
Rather than trying to erase the past, you begin recognizing that every part of your journey has contributed to who you are becoming.
The trauma is no longer your identity.
The illness is no longer your entire story.
The grief no longer consumes every moment.
Instead, these experiences become woven into a much larger narrative of resilience, compassion, and purpose.
Many people notice that they naturally begin reflecting on their healing journey with gratitude instead of only pain. They can finally see what their suffering taught them.
The Return of Energy
As the nervous system becomes more regulated and the body continues rebuilding, vitality often begins returning in noticeable ways.
This can look like:
greater emotional resilience
renewed creativity
increased motivation
spontaneous moments of joy
clearer intuition
genuine excitement about the future
Rather than simply surviving each day, you begin feeling called toward creating something meaningful with your life.
Healing is no longer just about reducing suffering- it becomes the path you had to take to learn to express your unique gifts.
The Inner Sun
Alchemy associates Citrinitas with the rising sun because this stage represents the revelation of our inner light. Many spiritual traditions describe this in different language: some call it Buddha nature, some call it Christ consciousness. It could also be describe as living from the heart.
Whatever language resonates with you, the experience is the same: your capacity for compassion expands. You begin recognizing that everyone carries invisible wounds. Judgment softens. Curiosity grows. Forgiveness becomes easier. This doesn't mean you accept harmful behavior, but because you understand the nature of suffering more fully. Forgiveness emerges naturally as your nervous system spends more time experiencing safety.
Living Your Purpose
Citrinitas is often accompanied by a strong desire to contribute.
Many people feel drawn toward:
deepening education or study
consistent meditation
creative expression like writing, music, painting or gardening
strengthening meaningful relationships
volunteering or serving others
sharing their own healing journey
Becoming Gold
One of the greatest lessons here is that healing is not about returning to who you were before your suffering- it is about becoming someone entirely new. The hardships you once wished had never happened slowly become the very experiences that allow you to understand others with extraordinary depth. Like fruit ripening in the warmth of the sun, your healing reaches a new level of maturity.
Life might still be difficult, but you have learned how to remain connected to yourself through it.
In the next post, we'll explore the fourth and final alchemical stage: Rubedo, the reddening- the stage of wholeness, embodiment, and the complete integration of body, mind, and spirit.
