The Four Alchemical Stages of Healing: Part Four – Rubedo, the Reddening
After the dawning light of Citrinitas comes the fourth and final alchemical stage: Rubedo, or "the reddening."
If Citrinitas is awakening to your inner light, Rubedo is becoming that light.
This is the culmination of the alchemical journey. After being broken apart in Nigredo, purified in Albedo, illuminated in Citrinitas, the many pieces of yourself are finally united into something whole. Classical alchemists described Rubedo as the completion of the Great Work- the moment when transformation is no longer happening internally alone, but is fully embodied in everyday life.
This is not the end of growth. Rather, it is the beginning of living from the wisdom you have earned.
The Reddening
Rubedo is the process of becoming fully yourself.
The symbols associated with this stage are:
the color red
the philosopher's stone
gold
the rose
the phoenix
the sacred marriage (illustrated in The Lovers card in Tarot)
the circle
In Rubedo there is a quiet sense of resolution. The internal conflict that once consumed so much energy begins to settle, and your life gradually becomes an expression of your deepest values rather than your deepest wounds.
There is a feeling of finally being at home within yourself.
The Sacred Marriage
One of the central symbols of Rubedo is the sacred marriage.
In alchemy, this represents the union of opposites. The wounded parts of ourselves are no longer rejected. Logic and intuition begin working together. Strength and vulnerability become partners rather than enemies. The body and spirit are no longer experienced as separate but as expressions of the same living whole. Your healing reaches a point where you stop trying to become someone else. Instead, you fully inhabit the person you already are.
Many people describe this stage as feeling deeply authentic. They become less concerned with meeting other people's expectations and more interested in living in alignment with what feels true. Decisions become simpler because they arise from an integrated sense of self rather than fear, obligation, or survival.
Living the Transformation
The most obvious sign of Rubedo is not perfect, but rather being fully self trusting. Your inner world and your outer life begin reflecting one another. You trust your body- you trust your intuition- and you express yourself honestly.
There is often a deep appreciation for ordinary life. You are no longer striving to learn more, create more, serve more. The simplicities of a sunrise, a shared meal, a completed chore, or simply sitting in silence begins to feel profoundly fulfilling. Joy no longer depends entirely on circumstances because it arises from a settled relationship with yourself.
Becoming a Guide
Rubedo often carries a natural desire to mentor others. Because of the energy you emanate, people seek you out for your wisdom, experience, or simply your calming presence. This is not about rescuing people or convincing everyone to heal the way you did. It is about quietly embodying what is possible. Your life itself becomes an invitation for others to trust that transformation can happen.
One of the beautiful paradoxes of healing is that the wounds that once caused the greatest suffering often become the source of our greatest wisdom. We are able to sit with another person's pain because we have learned how to sit with our own.
The Great Work Continues
Although Rubedo represents the completion of the alchemical process, it is not a permanent destination where life suddenly becomes effortless. Challenges will arise. Loss and grief will occur. Things will become uncertain again. New challenges will emerge. Inevitably, there comes a time when something will ask us to let go of an old identity once again. When that happens, we may find ourselves entering another Nigredo.
It is important you know now that this shouldn't be discouraging.
The alchemical journey is not a straight line but a spiral. Each time we move through the cycle, we return with greater wisdom, deeper compassion, and a stronger capacity to trust ourselves. We are never starting over from the beginning. We are simply beginning again from a higher level of understanding.
Perhaps this is one of the greatest lessons alchemy has to offer: darkness is no longer something to fear. Every ending carries the seeds of a new beginning. Every season of dissolution is preparing the ground for another transformation.
