The Seven Alchemical Processes of Healing: Part One – Calcination
Throughout the last several posts, we've explored the Four Alchemical Stages of Healing: Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, and Rubedo. These stages describe the broad landscape of transformation, from the darkness of dissolution to the wholeness of embodiment.
But within those four stages are another set of teachings that the alchemists considered equally important: the Seven Alchemical Processes.
If the four stages describe where we are on the journey, the seven processes describe how transformation actually happens.
These processes are the psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual movements that gradually reshape us.
Each process serves a different purpose, but together they move us through the four great stages of alchemy.
Today we'll begin with the first process: Calcination.
Calcination
Calcination is the fire that begins the entire journey.
In classical alchemy, calcination referred to placing a substance into an intense fire until impurities were burned away and only the essential material remained. Symbolically, this process represents the burning away of everything that no longer serves us.
This is the fire that we find in Nigredo.
Our identities begin cracking open. The beliefs we built our lives around no longer feel true. The roles we have spent years performing begin to fall apart. Pride, certainty, perfectionism, and the illusion that we can control everything begin dissolving under the heat of reality.
Calcination is rarely comfortable because it asks us to face what we have spent years avoiding. We are confronted with our limitations, our fears, our wounds, and the ways we have been protecting ourselves. It can feel as though life is stripping away everything familiar, leaving us wondering who we are without the identities we once relied upon.
To survive this stage, we must remember that fire does not destroy what is essential. It only burns away what was never truly you to begin with.
The Fire of Transformation
Emotionally, Calcination can appear as waves of anger and frustration. Many people experience intense moments where they suddenly recognize unhealthy relationships, limiting beliefs, addictive patterns, or ways they have abandoned themselves to gain approval from others. There is often a strong desire to say, "No more", and to set clear and fierce boundaries.
Physical Expressions of Calcination
Because alchemy has always viewed the body and psyche as inseparable, Calcination can also have physical expressions.
This can look like:
fevers during illness
intense sweating, flushing and hot flashes
desire to engage in vigorous movement or exercise
periods of heightened inflammation
Just as emotional fire burns away outdated beliefs, physical fire can symbolize the body's efforts to transform and release what no longer serves it.
Working With Calcination
Rather than resisting this fire, alchemical traditions encouraged people to participate in it consciously.
Practices associated with Calcination include:
safely burning old journals, letters, or possessions that represent identities you are releasing
engaging in movement practices that generate heat
confronting fears instead of avoiding them
allowing yourself to experience healthy anger when it helps you to establish necessary boundaries
honestly examining and discarding the beliefs and habits that no longer align with who you are becoming
The purpose is not destruction for its own sake- the purpose is to create space. Every transformation begins with letting something go.
Before we can become who we are meant to be, the false structures we have built around ourselves must first be reduced to ash. Only then can something stronger, wiser, and more authentic begin to grow from the dust.
In the next post, we'll explore the second alchemical process: Dissolution- the process of softening, surrender, and allowing what has been broken open to dissolve into something entirely new.
